Take Profit Trader Trading Test rules by account size (25K to 150K): target, drawdown, contracts

By TradeDesk HQ editorial desk · checked against the official sources below

The short answer

Take Profit Trader Trading Test rules by size: the 50K needs $3,000 profit with a $2,000 end-of-day trailing drawdown and at most 6 contracts (60 micros). Every size needs at least 3 trading days and a best day below 50% of net profit, with no time limit on the monthly subscription. Targets run from $1,500 on 25K to $9,000 on 150K, drawdowns from $1,500 to $4,500, and a reset costs $79 to $199.

Rules 1 and 2: profit target and maximum position

Rule 1 sets one profit target per account size: $1,500 on 25K, $3,000 on 50K, $4,500 on 75K, $6,000 on 100K and $9,000 on 150K. Rule 2 caps the number of contracts you can have open at once, and the firm calls it a static number: 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 standard contracts. On permitted micro products the allowance is 10x, so the firm's own example is up to 60 micro contracts on the 50K. The article does not describe how a mixed position of standard and micro contracts is counted, so ask support before combining them. The permitted-products list currently names ten micro symbols: MES, MNQ, MYM, M2K, MCL, MGC, MBT, MET, M6E and M6A. Our arithmetic, not the firm's: the 25K target equals its drawdown, the 50K target is 1.5 times its drawdown, and the 100K and 150K targets are twice theirs.

Rule 3: how the end-of-day trailing drawdown moves

The test drawdown is calculated only at the end of the trading day, not during open trades, and appears in the Control Center as Minimum Account Balance. The firm's 25K example: the drawdown is $1,500, so the minimum account balance starts at $23,500. If you earn $1,000 on day 1 your end-of-day balance is $26,000 and the minimum balance moves up to $24,500, still $1,500 behind your highest end-of-day balance. It keeps following your highest end-of-day balance until it reaches the original $25,000 starting balance, then stops trailing and stays fixed. The other starting floors in the table ($48,000, $72,500, $97,000, $145,500) are the same subtraction applied to the firm's drawdown figures. Because only end-of-day balances count, an intraday high that is gone by the close does not lift the floor.

When the test account is liquidated

The floor only moves at end of day, but the breach check is not end-of-day. Rule 3 says that if your account drops to the Minimum Account Balance at any time, through realized or unrealized losses, the account is immediately liquidated. An open loss that touches the floor during the session therefore ends the test even if the trade would have recovered by the close. The dashboard balance is not real time; it updates between 8 and 9 PM Eastern, so watch the floor on your platform. The firm's drawdown-tracking article, written for PRO accounts, points to the Auto Liquidate Threshold Value in RTrader Pro and the Drawdown Auto Liq Level and Dist Drawdown columns in Tradovate.

Test drawdown vs PRO drawdown

Keep the two scopes apart. On the Trading Test the trailing floor follows your highest end-of-day balance. On PRO accounts, the firm's drawdown-tracking article says the trailing drawdown is calculated intraday from your peak balance including realized and unrealized gains, and that it also stops trailing at the starting balance. Our Take Profit Trader PRO vs PRO+ payout guide, built from the firm's PRO articles, covers the PRO drawdown, the buffer you must build before withdrawals and the PRO+ end-of-day rule.

Rule 4: approved products, the 6 PM to 5 PM Eastern window and the 4:55 PM auto-flat

You may trade most futures listed on CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX. The permitted-products list names 34 symbols: the index contracts ES, NQ, YM and RTY, energy CL and NG, metals GC, SI and HG, the treasury contracts ZT, ZF, ZN and UB, seven currency futures, soybeans, soybean oil, wheat, live cattle and the ten micros above. If a product you want is not listed, the firm asks you to contact live chat so it can review adding it. Positions cannot be carried from one trading day into the next: the window runs 6 PM to 5 PM Eastern, the trading day ends at 5 PM, and the firm automatically closes any open position at 4:55 PM Eastern. Trades opened at or after 6 PM count toward the next trading day. Two liquidation traps sit in this rule: if your product's market closes before 5 PM Eastern and you cannot exit before that close, the account is liquidated, and missing a holiday-adjusted close does the same. The holiday schedule is your responsibility.

Rule 5: three trading days and the 50% consistency rule

You must trade at least 3 trading days, where a trading day is any day with at least one trade; if you hit the target in 2 days you still need one more active day. There is no time limit. Your best day's net P/L divided by your total net P/L must be below 50%, and the firm stresses that exceeding it does not fail the account. Instead the required profit rises to more than twice your best day, and the updated goal appears in your dashboard. The firm's 50K example: days of +$2,000, +$600 and +$500 give $2,000 / $3,100 = 65%, so you must make more than $4,000 before the account qualifies. The threshold is strictly below 50%: the firm's own check is $2,000 / $4,001. The dashboard's How Am I Doing? panel shows trading days, progress to target, consistency and any broken rule, and updates between 8 and 9 PM Eastern.

Rule 6: no counter positions on any account you control

Rule 6 is not specific to the test. It bans opposite positions in the same or closely related products across any accounts under the same beneficial control, and it bans coordinating or mirroring opposite trades with another trader. The related pairs named today are ES and MES, NQ and MNQ, YM and MYM, and the firm says the list is not exhaustive. Its example: long 2 ES in one account and short 1 MES in another is a violation and both accounts are liquidated automatically. When a counter position is detected the account is liquidated, all profit in it is forfeited, and you receive an email with a downloadable Counter-Positions Report; repeated or severe cases can bring permanent closure or a ban. Multiple accounts are allowed as long as they never hold opposite positions, hedging with correlated futures is prohibited, and opposite positions created by a trade copier count as your own trades. The FAQ says a liquidated test account may be reset or, depending on circumstances, wait until its next renewal date for possible re-activation.

Subscription, resets and failing the test

The test is a monthly subscription billed on the same calendar day as the original purchase under it; the rule articles do not state the fee, so check the firm's checkout. Breaking a rule does not cancel the subscription, you must cancel it yourself in the dashboard. A reset gives you a new test with the same parameters and rules and costs $79 on 25K, $99 on 50K, $139 on 75K, $169 on 100K and $199 on 150K; it does not change the renewal date. If a renewal payment fails after the firm's retries the account expires and cannot be reactivated, and an overdue balance blocks the move to PRO even after a pass. Passing cancels the subscription automatically, and PRO has no recurring subscription fee. The firm's points program gives 250 points the first time you pass and 1 point per dollar spent; a reset can be redeemed for 2,000 to 10,000 points and a new test account for 3,000 to 11,000 points depending on size. We do not convert points to dollars.

What Rules 1 to 6 do not say

The six rule articles list no daily loss limit and no news-trading restriction for the test, and they do not cap the number of resets. They do not say how micro and standard contracts combine against the position cap, and outside the Rule 6 counter-position case they do not describe what happens to a failed test at renewal. Where this guide says the firm does not state something, ask its live chat rather than assuming.
